The Hatchling

This is part of a series of the model in the same pose, holding something. In this one, she's embracing a young dragon, just hatched. Her hair, the dragon's tail, and the tree form a triad symbol. There are also triad symbols on her robe. The triad means different things in different cultures, such as mind, body, spirit; thought, feeling, emotion; creation, preservation, destruction; power, intellect, love. In my own thinking, a Dragon symbolizes creativity, power, and wisdom.

This is an allegory about how it's easier to remain comfortably asleep instead of waking to face the challenges that courage and wisdom have to offer. It's a study for a larger painting.

Coded Message from Famous Artist

The figure is done from a live model. The background is an encrypted quote from a famous artist, with a red herring or two thrown in to make it a little harder to decipher. The code itself should be easy a good cryptologist to decipher. Feel free to try!

I've always loved secret codes. I used to make them up when I was a kid. Many years later as an adult I found out that my Dad was a code breaker in World War II. I guess it must have been in the air.

The figure was from a live session at AVAA in Austin, Texas. I added in the roses to give her something to think about, and also to enter the Daily Paintworks challenge. Pink roses symbolize sympathy and grace, which go nicely with her thoughtful expression. After the roses, a frog showed up, then a butterfly, then a key. Keys have gotten awfully popular of late, but I've decided to keep doing them anyway.

Terlingua Golden

Lately I'm pulled very strongly in the direction of realism.  The idea for this one is the Terlingua Ghost Town of Terlingua, Texas. I've got a lot of photos of those old adobe ruins, and I've been wanting to populate them.

She's holding an apple, and I got to thinking how rare a crisp, juicy apple would be out in the summer heat of Terlingua in the 1930's. It would have to be imported from up north, and would no doubt be rather expensive.

This is a second version of "Study in Pink" which can be seen by scrolling down. Tried out straight realism with that one, but that just isn't me. I have to make it magical, hence the addition of pigs on pedestals, pansies, paisleys, polkadots, and a parrot. Playing with the letter "P." In which case, she must be a princess.

About this painting: Our thoughts have a profound influence on our lives. Like the rope in the painting, a line of thought can seem to take on a life of its own.

Work in Progress, Detail

Work in Progress. Acrylic on stretched canvas. The finished art will be 8x10; this is a detail. I started it from a live model and got the head/shoulders done. The rest of the figure will be finished from a photo.   Working from life provides visual information that a photograph doesn't; while a photo simplifies shapes and values, so each is useful to work from.

Food for Thought

"Food for Thought" 8x8 inches, acrylics on illustration board. Genre, fantasy.

The painting started out smaller, but it was too small to frame, so I glued it onto another illustration board, thereby adding a border. It can be framed as is, without glass. Note the heart shaped by the bird's head, the girl's elbow, and the greenery to the side of her.

"Her New Hat" 8x6 acrylics on panel. This was from a live model in a painting studio I attend. Want to thank Eve Larson for advising me to crop it (it started out as 8x8) and Kelly Borsheim for giving me help with the hat. Two wonderful artists and wonderful friends!

Clarity and Boundaries: oil painting figure landscape surreal

"Clarity and Boundaries" 5x7 oil on Everlast canvas panel. The flower represents clarity, and the right shoulder fading into the background represents boundaries that are vague. The painting represents the moment of arriving at clarity. Clarity helps establish boundaries; knowing what you want means that you cannot be unduly influenced, and can stick to your goals. SOLD.

Keeper of the Keys

"Keeper of the Keys" oil  on 12x12 inch canvas.

This started out as a regular figure painting, but I redid it in monochrome, keeping the original pose.  The underpainting is done in violet oxide acrylic, with oil glazes over it. I learned a lot glazing the painting. Also had lots of fun with the owl and the cat.  It still needs to dry for several months; then I will put a varnish on it.

Jester with an Egg

Acrylic, 8 x 10 on canvas. Don't have a name for it yet (any suggestions?). It's a jester, walking through a cave, holding an egg. This one also has cutouts on it (like the previous one) and that's the LAST time I ever glue on a cutout piece of canvas. Too hard to finesse the edges!

This one is glazes over an underpainting. Love painting that way; the more I do it the easier it gets. Helps a lot with values (although I am a Libra I appreciate values and value them highly).

Trying like crazy to keep up with blogging after a schedule change. Also I don't paint fast enough (yet) to post more often, so I'll have to throw in a WIP or two from now on. Thanks for tuning in to this blog.
