Moonfish
Inspired by Daily Paintworks "Moon" challenge. I love portraying the Moon, especially a crescent moon. In this one I was trying for some visual puns, with the night sky in the shape of a big fish, and the clouds in the shapes of more sea creatures. Signed on upper left corner. 6x6 inches, acrylic on wood panel.

Work in Progress, Day 2
Work In Progress
Medium: Acrylic on stretched wrapped canvas
Size: 10x8
Genre: Fantasy
Started it out with a live model, and now am completing it with photos taken at the modeling session. I will be adding other elements, such as the column in the background, possibly some flowers in the front. Maybe a creature in the background, and some trees. We'll see! I'll post it even if it doesn't come out to meet my expectations.

Work in Progress, Detail
Work in Progress. Acrylic on stretched canvas. The finished art will be 8x10; this is a detail. I started it from a live model and got the head/shoulders done. The rest of the figure will be finished from a photo. Working from life provides visual information that a photograph doesn't; while a photo simplifies shapes and values, so each is useful to work from.

What's the Buzz?
"What's the Buzz?" Medium: Acrylic on panel. Size, 5x7 inches. Genre, nature. This was from the "insects" challenge on Daily Paintworks. I don't usually paint straight realism; I depend heavily on my imagination to create an interesting image. So it's a stretch for me just to keep it simple. Done from a photo I took at Zilker Gardens, Austin TX.

Finished Iris Still Life (Glazed Grisaille Oil Painting)

"Irises" oil on canvas, 8x10.
Got this one finished, glazes and all. Since this was my very first attempt at glazing, it got a bit alla prima towards the end. Some of my initial underpainting got too well covered.
In the past few weeks I've been reading "How To Paint Like the Old Masters" by Joseph Sheppard, and it has helped tremendously. Very informative book. If you want to glaze in oil paints, this is definitely one to read.
Even though I enjoyed painting this still life, and I know that the straight realism has tremendous appeal, I'm pretty much set on my course of doing the fantastical genre. However, I'm determined on conquering realism because the style/genre I want to paint in demands it, and if I ever get skilled enough in realism to match my imagination, that would be highly gratifying!
