Sympathy and Grace

The figure was from a live session at AVAA in Austin, Texas. I added in the roses to give her something to think about, and also to enter the Daily Paintworks challenge. Pink roses symbolize sympathy and grace, which go nicely with her thoughtful expression. After the roses, a frog showed up, then a butterfly, then a key. Keys have gotten awfully popular of late, but I've decided to keep doing them anyway.

The other day I did a demo for the Austin Palette Club on "limited palette." This frog painting is done using only 3 colors: thalo blue and burnt sienna, plus titanium white. Yes, it really does make a green when those two colors are mixed and white is added. You have to use the "green shade" of thalo blue to make this happen; the "red shade" of thalo won't work.  Model was a toy plastic frog, set up next to a little glass bottle.

This one started out with the Frog sitting in a tree, but it just didn't look right, so I put in the black background and the pebbly foreground and things popped. Black backgrounds are a new thing for me and I'm having fun exploring them.

After I painted the frog, it seemed as though he was looking intently at something. The painting didn't seem completed.  What better to capture a frog's attention than a big, fat, juicy fly.

I almost painted over this one, but the painting spoke to me and I revised it instead. In the previous version the Bird was decidedly unfriendly. I decided to make him friendlier, and he came out looking sort of neutral, and I really like that. I also redid the color to give it a more oldfashioned feel.

In the earlier version the Bird symbolized the Inner Critic, but he has morphed into the power of Creativity, which is neutral, and can be used for both constructive and destructive purposes. If the Bird is befriended, beautiful things can happen.

A very sedate Fairy with a group of goofy friends.  I wanted to make her wings look like they are actually growing out of her back. For reference I used a photo taken of a model in my art group, plus other photos I've taken of peacocks, butterflies, cats, and trees. The frog was one of my collection of plastic animals.

I've been working on painting faster, and have found that if I paint thin, it's much easier to go fast. This one is a little tighter than what I've been doing lately. Still experimenting with this thinner paint body; maybe I can loosen it up just slightly. I also am enjoying putting glazes over an area, to either knock it back or give it some extra color.

I've acquired what amounts to a whole collection of plastic frogs, and used two of them for the frog in this painting. The column is from a clay model I made, and the pansies from a photo I took.

Know Thyself

The scroll says "Owknay Aythay Elfsay." Hope you can guess what that means & what language it is! The frog is there because I wanted an interaction between the figure and another character. The columns are there because I love Ionic columns.

Monumental

I had done a previous "Rabbit Monument" painting that didn't quite work, so I decided to redo it with a square format. I got the idea of adding the tortiose to give it a story element. Also the rabbits went from real live rabbits to stone monumental rabbits, which adds more to the story. Although the tortoise won the race, it is the rabbits who built monuments to themselves. The tortoise didn't get a monument; but is longer lived that a rabbit, and besides, staying focused is its own reward.

The monuments to the center and to the left are clay models I made. The monument to the right is a candy box (worth holding onto, IMO). The tortoise and frog are plastic animals. In real life, the frog is about twice the size of the tortoise. The rabbits are ceramic. The tree trunk is a bit of interesting wood I found. I set up the whole thing like a still life, then used photos for the rest of it.

I went back to the original violet oxide underpainting; I really like that color. The face got changed because the painting insisted on looking like the model. You can't argue with a painting. It will beat you every time.

This might be called a spiritual quest. The frogs represent earthly concerns; the butterfly represents the spirit. One of the frogs is wearing a locket, and a key is dangling from her hat. This means that spiritual and earthly concerns are intermingled.

 Here's the map, done. Guess where I put my artist signature.  Worked on the background a bit, to push the trees back. That right side background still needs some definition, so it's not finished yet. But getting close, at least I hope so.

Treasure Map WIP 3

So far so good. Background needs to be pushed back; it's encroaching. The right side background especially needs something, because it's kind of "dead." I'm happy with how the frog turned out. Not too sure about the butterfly. Tried it with a brighter color, but it definitely should be light. Anyways, from here on out it's mainly work on the background.

The face is finished, and hopefully the hand, although it may need a little pink added. Yup, that's a frog on her hat, but it's artificial, so it's not very heavy. The butterfly, however, is real. The butterfly is offering to lead her to the correct place to dig. The frog, being artificial, is entirely useless in that regard.
