The figure was from a live session at AVAA in Austin, Texas. I added in the roses to give her something to think about, and also to enter the Daily Paintworks challenge. Pink roses symbolize sympathy and grace, which go nicely with her thoughtful expression. After the roses, a frog showed up, then a butterfly, then a key. Keys have gotten awfully popular of late, but I've decided to keep doing them anyway.

This was a different palette from what I'm accustomed to using with viridian, alizarin crimson, and napthol crimson taking prominence. It's produced a very cool looking ambience, and that's something else that's new to me. Usually I'm into the warm palettes

Time, distance, and circumstances may separate us from friends and loved ones, but love knows no boundaries nor impediments.

This was a small profile study I made on unstretched Yes! canvas and I liked it, so I affixed it to a panel. I often use a profile as my gateway image whenever I am stuck creatively. I was kind of blocked for several months, but it has passed, and I am now back to happily working in my studio.

This is a study for a painting, but it became a thing in itself, because the painting I'm planning doesn't have a window in it. I added in the window because the composition needed something more, so here she is, at the window but looking into her own thoughts instead of gazing at whatever is out there in the world.

Terlingua Golden

Lately I'm pulled very strongly in the direction of realism.  The idea for this one is the Terlingua Ghost Town of Terlingua, Texas. I've got a lot of photos of those old adobe ruins, and I've been wanting to populate them.

She's holding an apple, and I got to thinking how rare a crisp, juicy apple would be out in the summer heat of Terlingua in the 1930's. It would have to be imported from up north, and would no doubt be rather expensive.

This is a second version of "Study in Pink" which can be seen by scrolling down. Tried out straight realism with that one, but that just isn't me. I have to make it magical, hence the addition of pigs on pedestals, pansies, paisleys, polkadots, and a parrot. Playing with the letter "P." In which case, she must be a princess.

This painting was accepted into the Rites of Spring 2013 show.

The scroll says "Owknay Aythay Elfsay." Hope you can guess what that means & what language it is! The frog is there because I wanted an interaction between the figure and another character. The columns are there because I love Ionic columns.

 Here's the map, done. Guess where I put my artist signature.  Worked on the background a bit, to push the trees back. That right side background still needs some definition, so it's not finished yet. But getting close, at least I hope so.

So far so good. Background needs to be pushed back; it's encroaching. The right side background especially needs something, because it's kind of "dead." I'm happy with how the frog turned out. Not too sure about the butterfly. Tried it with a brighter color, but it definitely should be light. Anyways, from here on out it's mainly work on the background.

Treasure Map: Work in Progress

The face is finished, and hopefully the hand, although it may need a little pink added. Yup, that's a frog on her hat, but it's artificial, so it's not very heavy. The butterfly, however, is real. The butterfly is offering to lead her to the correct place to dig. The frog, being artificial, is entirely useless in that regard.

Food for Thought

"Food for Thought" 8x8 inches, acrylics on illustration board. Genre, fantasy.

The painting started out smaller, but it was too small to frame, so I glued it onto another illustration board, thereby adding a border. It can be framed as is, without glass. Note the heart shaped by the bird's head, the girl's elbow, and the greenery to the side of her.

Friends With Fins

"Friends With Fins" 12 x 12 inches. Medium: acrylic on canvas. Genre: fantasy. Our lovely model in Friday painting studio was studying marine biology, so I thought it would be fun to portray her as a mermaid. I painted the fishes from some little plastic sea creatures that I received as a gift.

This was done from a live model, then once I got it home, started playing with it.
