Lately I've been painting landscapes. I'd been wanting to paint the Big Bend, Texas area for quite some time, but lacked the confidence. Every year for many years, my husband and I have made a pilgrimage there. I feel a familiarity and a love for that vast, beautiful, desolate, and formidible place. I've finally taken the leap into portraying it, and am very glad. For the time being I'm painting it from photos, but eventually may add plein aire into the mix.

This is a departure from my usual work, but I've decided not to limit myself when it comes to genre, and paint what I feel like painting. I love that kind of freedom.

This is about how we modern people relate to wilderness. For many of us, it's a road trip. It's also about the contrast between nature and the amenities of civilization. Both are fragile, yet both have an iconic strength.

"Seahorse Communications Device" Medium: Acrylic. Size 3x5 inches (it's tiny). Genre: fantasy. I'm obsessed with seahorses lately, can you tell? In this one, the seahorse is a communications device, much like a bluetooth, only it's prettier. The floating seahorses are the communications satellites. Also the idea of "is it underwater, or on land?" seems to be a good one to pursue. I love ambiguities. Lastly, from a photo I took of Waverly, in case anyone wonders. It's an old blurred photo that I've used several times.

This red onion was so gorgeous and so luminous, I was hesitant to paint it. Didn't know if I could do it justice. The eye is from looking in the mirror, and the tear, well tears are so wonderfully kitsch, I just had to do it. The idea of onions/tears appeals to me; this is the second teary onion one I've painted.
